Free spots
Costs nothingFree places for the view and the northern lights. Most are a walk or a short bus ride away, so you don't need a car.
Never stop on the road to watch. Park only in proper parking areas, wear reflective gear, and stay off the sea ice. Bring a headtorch for dark paths.
Walk times and bus lines from Arctic Norway: northern lights in walking distance and the Sherpa steps. The Tromsø bridge is closed to cars until 27 November at the latest, but you can always walk or cycle across (Svipper). Checked 28 Oct 2026.

Dress in wool layers, and bring a hat, mittens and warm boots. Best hours are usually 20:00 to 02:00. Step outside every half hour, because it can change fast.
What's going on up there
The sun blows out a stream of charged particles, called the solar wind. Earth's magnetic field steers some of them down into a ring around the North Pole. That ring is called the auroral oval, and Tromsø sits under it.
When the particles hit gas high in the air, the gas glows. Green is oxygen glowing about 100 to 150 km up, and red comes from oxygen even higher. That's far above the clouds, so a gap in the clouds is all you need.
The Kp index runs from 0 to 9 and tells how disturbed Earth's magnetic field is. Higher means stronger, wider lights. Because Tromsø is already under the oval, you don't need a big number. Clouds are usually the real problem.

Supermarket or kiosk?
Checked 28 Oct 2026Real price tags from Rema 1000 and Narvesen. Snacks and drinks cost up to twice as much at a kiosk.
Drinks are plus 2 kr pant, the bottle deposit. You get it back when you return the bottle. Sørlands Chips: 48.90 kr for 100 g at Narvesen, 25.50–33.90 kr for a 200 g bag at Rema.
When the kiosk is worth it
Tap an item in the table to see what the kiosk really charges. Snacks and drinks are up to twice the price, but the kiosk does win on a few things:
- Hot dog for 25 kr. Narvesen's wiener sausage has a fixed low price (28 kr to eat inside). Toppings like onions cost 6–10 kr. Other sausages cost 60–90 kr.
- Coffee and a roll for 49 kr. Another fixed low price.
- "2 for" deals. For example 2 Freia chocolate bars for 35 kr, or 2 Monster for 60 kr. That's close to supermarket prices.
- Red "50% rabatt" stickers. Sandwiches near their date are half price.
